The Umbono group, is majority owned in South Africa by Historically Disadvantaged South African (“HDSAs”) through a broad based structure led by entrepreneurial professionals. Total ownership by HDSAs is 53%, where the Inhlakanipho Education and Development Trust (“IEDT”) and the Umholi Development Trust own 23% and the balance of 30% is owned by Group professional staff. Of the economic benefits that flow from the Inhlakanipho Trust, 50% are attributable to black women.
The IEDT was established by the Umbono Group to provide mentorship and schooling to promising black South African learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. Umbono Group professionals serve as mentors to the beneficiaries of the trust. Inhlakanipho Trust owns a 13% equity take in the Umbono SA holding company and represents a vehicle for equity participation by local community groups in Umbono’s mining and resources projects. The Umholi Trust is dedicated to the benefit of developing young black leaders, in the South African context.
